The Band
Conor Coughlan - Lead Vocals / Guitar / Harmonica
Conor is the founding member of The Gutterdogs and entertains audiences with brilliant songwriting, thought provoking lyrics and heartfelt vocals. Conor Coughlan was born February 12, 1996 in London at Harold Wood Hospital. The first song Conor heard at just hours old was "Stay With Me - The Faces". His Father Michael (Mick) played it full blast in his hometown of Rainham, Essex, UK. At the age of 3 Conor was blowing into harmonicas, strumming guitars. and watching Neil Young videos, using a tennis racket guitar to imitate every move. At age 4 Conor developed an obsession for Oasis' Liam Gallagher. Again, he started copying everything he did, including wearing all the clothes. This obsession lasted for a very long time and is still a favorite to this day. The imitations continued with the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart.
Conor attended Whybridge infant school at age 4. He loved the first day but when is parents woke him up the next morning for school, Conor responded "What!! I thought i only had to go once!" He hated everyday thereafter, waking up, crawling across the floor, declaring his legs didn't work so he couldn't go to school. Conor then attended Whybridge junior school at age 7 and finished at age 11. This was the period his interest in music intensified. Mick taught him his first guitar chord at age 9. Conor would rush home from school and strum the same chord for a week. Eventually Mick would go on to teach his son more chords and everyday Conor would rush home and practice. Conors image began to change with longer and messier hair, beads around the neck and wrists with different shoes . This would evoke some strange glances from folks given that in England, school uniforms were mandatory.
At age nine Conor wrote his first song called "Hide" which is currently posted on YouTube. At age 10 Conor entered a competition for childrens tv house band. He got through to the final 5 but then they pulled the plug on the show. A few months later he entered an english TV show called "Britains Got Talent" in which he performed The Rolling Stones "Wild Horses". Unfortunately, after spending all day in London lined up among thousands in the pouring rain he didnt get through.
At age 11 Conor attended Brittons Secondary School (which is the equivalent of a high school). In December of that year the Coughlan family made the move to Canada for an employment opportunity for his Father. Conor had always been drawn to America. Arizona was an option but due to difficulties surrounding 9/11, the Coughlan family ended up in Saskatoon, Canada on December 18, 2008. The Birthday of Conor's idol Kieth Richards. Feeling he was different with his fondness for 70's rock, he really didn't fit in with his peers preference for Rap and Hip Hop, the move to Canada allowed Conor to feel more accepted and to further develop his creative ability.
Conor attended Silverspring Elementary School at the age of 12 and finished at age 13. The first couple weeks was difficult to socialize and make friends. Conor simply sat alone, listening to music. Conor was soon feeling accepted and while sitting on a bus, Nick Seaboyer handed him his Ipod and asked him to pick a song. Seeing a list of tunes by the Rolling Stones, Niel Young and Tom Petty, Conor felt this cat knows what he's talking about and soon they were jamming and Nick became the first member and bassist for what would become The Gutterdogs.
Ryley, the drummer also went to the same school but they didn't associate much at that time.
At 13, Conor attended Centennial High School and with the freedom of high school , Conor and Nick began bringing their instruments to school. It was then they discovered Ryley was a drummer and became the third member in their lengthy jam sessions. Ryley fit in perfectly and that was the beginning of the dogs.
After a few gigs, the name evolved into "The Gutterdogs", performing as a three piece band and playing at various clubs, private functions and anywhere else they could play. They were well received everywhere they played and developed a modest fan base. Conor felt something was missing and knew they needed another guitarist to fill in the gap. The band searched for a year and through a lack of interest and prospects just not fitting in , they went through numerous guitarists until finally they hooked up with Christian Klein, a natural fit for the band. Christian rounded out the full polished sound Gutterdog audiences enjoy today.
Nick Seaboyer - Bass Guitar / Backing Vocals
As the original bassist for The Gutterdogs, Nick really fills the groove. With impeccable timing, he adds the texture and feeling that's critical to the bands overall sound.
Nicholas Aaron Paul Seaboyer was born in Saskatoon on February 15th 1995.
Nick grew up influenced by his parents music and sang along to bands such as The Beatles, Coldplay and Oasis, Young Nick was quite sociable which was a good thing as in the early years, his family moved around a lot so he had no problems making new friends.
After returning to Saskatoon from Calgary, Nick attended College Park Elementary School and although he was not very athletic, by grade 3 he had lost interest in music and entered into an obsession with basketball. The obsession continued as Nick again changed schools to Silverspring. Unlike previous experiences, Nick now found it more difficult to make friends however he did play basketball for a club team.
At age 12, Nick's father bought him his first electric guitar. After learning a few simple songs his love for music returned as did a love for The Beatles. Soon he had every Beatles song in his collection and knew the lyrics to all of them. After researching on songs, in particular "Roll over Beethoven" he discovered it was a Chuck Berry original which influenced his preference for older classic artists such as Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Fats Domino.
By age 13, Nick developed a propensity towards the bass guitar and Paul McCartney which resulted in a trip to the music store and the purchase of a new Epiphone bass. Nick taught himself some simple songs, practiced faithfully, but it was short lived as he once again lost interest and went back to his love of basketball.
At 14, Nick and Conor were brought together on a bus during a field trip and hit it off due to their passion for all the same music. There were some communication issues at first as Nick was unaccustomed to Conor's English accent but soon they were jamming in Conor's basement. Nick's inexperience playing bass made jamming somewhat tedious therefore he enrolled in lessons. Nick's bass playing skills and techniques developed rapidly and things accelerated and Nick and Conor would spend every free moment in and out of school practicing which led to the beginning of The Gutterdogs.
Christian Klein - Guitar / Backing Vocals
Christian Klein joined The Gutterdogs in February 2011. Christian's playing style is unique and extremely energetic. His creativity has added another dimension to the band.
Christian was born October 18, 1992 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He had an ear for music at a very early age and quite often after hearing a song once , would hum the entire melody flawlessly.
Christian's mother passed away at age 6 and he was raised by his father who recognized his talent very early. At 12 yrs old, his dad gave him an old electric guitar out of the basement, explained how to read tabs and everything else just came naturally.
Over the years, Christian's musical influences have been very broad. From Billy Talent , Metallica, and Green Day in the early stages to Cream, Rush, Opeth, Dream Theatre, Mars Volta, Pavement, The Beatles, and just about anything that peaks his interest. After attending Holliston Elementary, Christian moved to Walter Murray and while working partime and devoting most of his free time to music, graduated with Honors. He currently attends the U of S and has maintained the same high academic standards.
While Christian continues to experiment with his music in his home studio, fine tuning his creative skills on personal projects, his home is with The Gutterdogs. Quiet and reserved off stage, when let loose with The Gutterdogs to share the high energy rock with audiences , anything can happen and often does.
Luke Newman - Drums / Percussion
Luke is very pleased to be joining The Gutterdogs as drummer!! Luke was born in 1996 and was always a very "thumpy" child. By the age of 7 it was clear that he needed an outlet. While attending a highland games, Luke's parents discovered that there was actually an organization that encouraged "thumpy" children. He is currently a Grade I (top end) Scottish pipe band drummer and has won many awards in solo and pipe band competitions across Canada and in Scotland. His pipe band, the Ogden Legion Pipe Band (Calgary), has competed with Luke as part of the drum corps at the World Championships in Glasgow in 2006, 2008 and again in the summer of 2011.
While Luke has excelled at solo pipe band style drumming, his first love is kit drumming and the strong rudiments he has honed during his solo snare career, he has successfully taken to the drum kit as well. He is heavily influenced musically by such diverse drummers as Neal Peart (Rush) and the jazz great, Buddy Rich and he continues to take rudiment lessons whenever he can from Reid Maxwell and John Fisher (both of Vancouver) to strengthen his already very sound fundamentals. Luke holds his sticks traditional-style and is known for his ability to drum musically, not just rhythmically. He is now playing his third drum kit; having started with a Pearl Forum series acoustic set, moved up to a Roland TDR9 electric set and most recently a Pearl Masters Custom series set for performances.
To say Luke is simply 'musically inclined' would be a huge understatement. In addition to drumming with The Gutterdogs, Luke is starting to fill in as drummer with the vocal jazz group Solstice and he plays and excels at improvisational jazz piano under the guidance of Zane Hrynewich (Saskatoon). On top of everything else, Luke is currently a drumming instructor with the 96th Highlanders Pipe Band in Saskatoon and also plays both alto and baritone saxophone in the Centennial High School band. While he certainly is a busy guy, Luke is now setting his priority to be a Gutterdog and he hopes the audience will enjoy the rhythms, fills and drumming musicality he brings to the tunes.
