Gillian Pinder

Gillian Pinder

In writing Gillian's first-ever musical bio, I must admit, it could appear to be somewhat biased. As her piano teacher for almost a decade, I have come to know her very well. I have had the priviledge to watch her grow up from a cute, wiggly little girl, into a beautiful, vibrant young lady, and a what I consider to be a fantastic musician/songwriter/songstress.

Gillian doesn't fit the stereotypical mold of the "sensitive artist". This sixteen year old is an elite soccer player, training for national competition. In fact, I hear she is so good, her future could include scholarships to major universities. To say that "Soccer is Gillian's passion"is an understatement.

Gillian lives with her mother in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, where she attends high school and trains, and composes.

Gillian has always been a talented pianist, especially in the area of improvisation. By the age of twelve, she was wowing me with her renditions of, and improvisations on classics, such as Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage", and Chick Corea's "La Fiesta". At the same time, her mother and mutual friends told me about her song writing, her self-taught abilities as a vocalist, guitarist, bassist, and drummer, and about a band she had started. My self-absorbed mind processed it as "kind of cool", but it was soon archived to some hidden directory in my brain.

In the early summer of 2009, Gillian played and sang a song she had written called "Fade to Grey" for me. I can't recall why or how she was convinced to let me hear it, but, I was simply blown away by her natural talent, the quality of her voice, the depth and maturity of her lyrics, and her willingness to effortlessly "bare her soul".  This was the beginning of a new dimension to our relationship. Gillian was no longer my student, but a respected peer and valued collaborator.

In the fall of 2009, I began building a digital recording studio in my house. I had worked as a session player in analog studios in the 1980's, and vowed that someday I would have my own..... but this digital stuff was brand new to me. Gillian played a major role in helping me survive through the "learning curve". She patiently watched me "stumble and bumble" as I awkwardly attempted to imitate a recording engineer.

Through it all, Gillian has continued to impress and amaze me. Her lyrics, her vocals, her musicianship, her patience, and the inspiration she has provided, have convinced me that "soccer may be her passion, but music is truly her soul".

To date, mainly due to my ineptness, we have worked on three of Gillian's songs. I hope, like me, you will hear the honesty, the passion, and purity of the music of Gillian Pinder. I am very proud of the little girl I began teaching so many years ago.
