When the term “express yourself” is used, how often do musicians really follow through? Emily Spiller is one who takes self-expression seriously. Really #%#! seriously.
For those who haven’t heard Emily yet, they could be forgiven for assuming here’s just another female singer-songwriter. After all, in essence, that’s what she is. But once the music starts and the first few lines are unleashed, all assumptions are trampled on.
Heads turn, people stop talking and start paying attention. From China to North America reviewers describe her as “blowing the house down”, and “standing apart from the dirge of nice girls with beautiful voices”.
Born and based on Vancouver Island, Canada, Emily’s voice is in demand from a diverse group of artists around the world; France’s Urihani, UK DJ Shawn Ward, Vancouver’s All Tribes Mission, New Zealand’s Sunset Records, and has toured across Asia and Australia with bands Crush and Landslide. She’s received airplay in Canada, United States, New Zealand and Australia for her 2007 release ‘Live At The Apartment’ and can be heard on various film scores. Festival goers from Christchurch to Victoria have not forgotten her sets and continue to ask her when she’s returning.
Emily is always looking for new ways of expressing her music and with that in mind she’s teamed with Vancouver-based musician/producer Wonderbro to create a soundscape not heard in her music before. It’s music to sit down with a drink or smoke and just let the songs pull you in. Or let the DJ play it and dance all night. What could be better than that? It’s like the girl next door in a party dress.
A self-described traveling gypsy, Emily has used her touring ways to infuse her music with a maturity and experience that normally would be beyond her years. She’ll pick up the touring trail again with these new songs to those familiar places in the summer of 2010, starting with Canada and Australia, and is always on the lookout for new adventures. If you don’t see your town or city on her touring list let us know where you are so we can find our way to you. And remember to wear your party clothes.....Gareth Carr - wearebulletproof.ca
"2 Late ?” -my favorite track, could definitely be the album’s single. It has a space/pop quality, combined with the lovely voice of Emily Spiller (who draws comparison to Anneke van Giersbergen). She sings several melodies, all of which stick in your mind, and overall it would fit perfectly on an Ayreon album, such as 01011001 or Universal Migrator Part 1: The Dream Sequencer. ...“One Way To Move,” again featuring Spiller, this time carrying a noir quality similar to Amy Winehouse. She sings in the seductive style of Billie Holiday and allows falsetto non-lexical vocables to accompany her. Again the music is smooth and affective, using subtle cymbals and keyboard timbres. “Some of Them” (again with Spiller) builds slowly with jazz trumpet and more prominent non-lexical vocables. Her multi-tracked vocals create a warm sound, and her different styles of singing throughout Music for the Planet is one of the album’s greatest strength..... "On the track "Some Of Them", bits of muted trumpet capably played by Romain Bly delightfully evoke a natural feeling of a warm summer day, along with Emily Spiller’s soulful vocal croon. Spiller’s slightly baritone voice, not unlike that of former Karnataka vocalist Lisa Fury, also features on "2 Late?", a tune offering mid-tempo programming from Moreau and drumming from Patrick Texier. "...Also, instead of sticking with dry narration and cheap sound effects, PadWorx threw in a completely original score. Several alternative rock artists also provide tracks for the app, including Adaline, Emily Spiller and Eve and the Ocean. They may not be mainstream artists, but their contributions set the proper tone for this app. Price: $4.99 File Size: 542 MB Developer: PadWorks Digital Media Platform: iPad iPadNewsDaily Rating (out of 4): ★★★★".....
